So excited about a Software Update!

Posted by geekmonkee on August 28, 2009

Why do Mac users get so excited about software updates?  Do we think that there will be something magical coming through that update that will make our computers so much better?  I do.  With the release of Snow Leopard today, I can hardly contain myself.  I won’t receive my copy of Snow Leopard until Monday, but I think I can make it.  Whenever I receive notification of a software update is ready for my computer, I rush to download and install it.  Apple does a great job of upgrading software with these updates that I hate to miss out on a new feature.  The iLife series is a great example of the little upgrades coming out and making a signicant change to the software.  Do you use iMovie 09?  Prime example.

Maybe I am a little strange to get excited about the software updates, but hey, who cares!  The next time you open your Mac and and you notice you have a software update.  Just remember this blog and how excited you secretly get!

Tickled Silver and Pink!

Posted by geekmonkee on April 25, 2009

I know.  Silver and Pink!  Let me explain.  I went out with the wife and kids this morning for a little excursion to the big town of Albemarle!  We dropped the kids off at church for program rehearsal and set off to Wal-Mart.  Yeah, Wal-Mart!  Wal-Mart has the image of putting local business out of business, but I’ll give them credit.  When I find a good deal there, I have to buy it!  My wife and I were walking around and I as I detoured her to the electronics section (which I always visit) we saw a small table of closeouts.  Closer examination revealed that they were selling digital cameras and camcorders for a lot less than retail price.  As I scanned the the table, I soon realized that there were Flip Ultra 30 minute Camcorders sitting on the table.  Sale price – $29.40!!!  After a Steve Carell “happy” dance, I explained to my wife how good of a deal it was and that we just had to have one!  I must be getting better at selling product because I talked her in to letting me buy two!  We bought two Flip videos, one silver and one pink!  What a great way to capture short video of my kids and life without the hassle!  Just had to share!

Where’s the GeekMonkee?

Posted by geekmonkee on March 18, 2009

Well, I know that it has been quite a while since I have been updating my site.  Life has been very busy over the past couple of months and I don’t see the next few getting any better.  We are in the middle of selling our house and have no prospects of finding a new one.  Oh well, it will happen.  Right?

Recently, I attended the NCTIES Conference.  This year it was held in Raleigh at the Raleigh Convention Center.  Great site, great location, and a fantastic conference.  It was good to see my loyal fans, all two of you!  It was also good to reconnect with my friends from around the state and country.  This was my first year at NCTIES as a vendor and I really enjoyed seeing and meeting new people.  I also got to teach a session on some new software and even helped plan a pre-conference session that was held at the NC History Museum.  Amazing experience!!!!!  I’ll talk about it later.

That’s enough for tonight.  I’ll be back in a couple of days.  Keep an eye on the site for some improvements over the next couple of weeks.  My goal is one little tweek a day.  I think I can, I think I can, I think….

NCETC and the GeekMonkee

Posted by geekmonkee on December 3, 2008

Well, it this is the fourth NCETC conference I have been too and this year I am in a little different role.  This year, I am an employee of CSI Technology Outfitters.  As September rolled around, I could not resist the temptation the urge to participate in the the sessions.  So, I registered our company for two Pre-Conference sessions.  Both were on cool Activstudio tips, one for Mac and one for PC.  Do you need to ask which one I did?  Anyway, today was the day that I got to go back to NCETC and present to my favorite people, Teachers!  I had a great group of people this morning and hopefully they will read this sometime this week. Getting to teach staff development to individuals there to learn, nothing better!  As I reflect on the past four conferences and the times at hand, I am truly blessed to be a part of a great team of individuals with CSI and to work with great groups of teachers like yourselves!  If you see me at the conference, stop, introduce yourself, and tell me how I can make this site better.  Have a great conference!

Sometimes, it’s best not to write!

Posted by geekmonkee on October 16, 2008

This week has been a doozy for the GeekMonkee.  I have been recovering from the world’s worst sinus infection and I have been the biggest baby.  So, to my loyal followers, I am alive and well and no need to seek a new leader.  I’ll write more next week.  Just not in the mood tonight!

Cult of the GeekMonkee?

Posted by geekmonkee on October 1, 2008

Is it possible that I have fans of the GeekMonkee website?  Nah, just people who have lost their way!  It is rewarding when you know that the few thoughts that I put down on a page are useful to someone out there. Anyway, I appreciate my few readers and hope they will keep reading as maybe, just maybe the GeekMonkee becomes more popular.

So, I am pretty proud that I am completing my second post of the week! Yeah for me!  I was somewhat inspired this evening.  I had a question come in from a reader about Keynote.  This meant that I got to test my fading skills.  After about an hour reading online and playing around, I think that I was able to answer the question.  At least I hope I did.  The question was about adding live web shots to a Keynote preso.  The answer, yes and it is really cool when you do.  I have posted a tutorial abou this on my Tech Handouts page.  Thanks for the question and the opportunity to keep my Mac skills up to date!

Keep the questions coming and I’ll keep the site going!

I’ll do better…and a couple of other things!

Posted by geekmonkee on September 29, 2008

Well, if I am going to blog, I need to blog.  Since I finally got the GeekMonkee site up and running I haven’t been back to make updates.  How can I expect people to use my site if I don’t update it. Hopefully, every Monday, I will try to make some type of update.  Anyway, I have been spending some time catching up on my favorite TV shows this past week.  I also got the chance to watch Meet the Robinsons (Disney) a few weeks ago that kind of leads to the purpose of this post.  My son has a peanut allergy and this is starting to appear in some of Hollywood’s stories.  In Meet the Robinsons, there is an instance that shows the seriousness of a food allergy and I think that Disney did a decent job of portraying the seriousness and demonstrated a believable reaction that contained a lot of truth.  My son picked up on it as he watched the movie and I feel like he was not misled.  So, why is Matt bringing this up?  Maybe to pat Disney on the back?  Not exactly.  I am also a big fan of the CBS series, How I Met Your Mother that comes on Monday nights.  Last week was the season premier and there was a peanut allergy incident on the show.  Ted’s girlfriend had an allergic reaction to some type of peanut product.  However, she didn’t bother to ask what she was eating or show any concern for her allergy.  By the way, she plays a doctor on the show!  I know that this is a TV show, but if Disney can do this, can’t everybody else?  The actress ended up being fine after a trip to the hospital, but when I finished watching it I was left thinking that it wasn’t a big deal.  If the allergy was not a big deal, why would you include it in your script and why would you inaccurately portray its impact on an individual?  I don’t plan on boycotting the show yet, but when you portray something that is in the national eye, can’t it be shown accurately?  There is my one little rant this week.  Sorry for those expecting something on the lighter side.  I’ll do better…
